Shundie Claims Historic Fourth Insaneorade Invitational Amidst Inspiring Battle

The sun shone brightly on the pristine greens of the Willow Creek Lawn Bowls Club today as Gary Shundie, a beloved figure in the Australasian lawn bowls community, clinched his remarkable fourth Insaneorade Invitational Lawn Bowls Open Carnival title. What makes this victory particularly poignant is the incredible journey Gary has undertaken since his cancer diagnosis in early 2022, turning his return to the sport into a testament of resilience and unwavering spirit.

The atmosphere was electric as Shundie delivered a series of masterful bowls, culminating in a nail-biting final end. As the winning shot settled, a roar erupted from the crowd, a mix of celebration for his triumph and admiration for his courage. Confetti, in the distinctive Insaneorade blue and white, rained down as Gary once again lifted the gleaming silver trophy, a familiar and cherished sight in his hands.

“I honestly can’t believe it,” a visibly emotional Gary shared, his voice breaking with gratitude. “There were days when I wasn’t sure I’d even be able to pick up a bowl again, let alone compete at this level. This trophy isn’t just for me; it’s for everyone who’s battling something, who’s been told they can’t. You can.” He paused, looking out at the cheering crowd, “The support, the messages… it kept me going on the toughest days.”

His wife, Sarah, who affectionately refers to him as “Gaz,” watched from the sidelines, her eyes beaming with pride. “He’s just incredible,” she whispered, her voice a mix of relief and joy. “When he got the diagnosis, our world stopped. But Gary, he’s always been a fighter. Lawn bowls has always been his passion, his escape. To see him out here, thriving, laughing… it’s the greatest victory of all. He’s my Gaz, my champion, on and off the green.”

The Insaneorade Board of Directors was quick to commend Shundie’s inspiring performance. Mr. David Chen, a representative from the board, expressed their profound admiration. “Gary Shundie embodies everything Insaneorade stands for – incredible strength, relentless determination, and an inspiring zest for life. His journey is a powerful reminder that with courage and support, even the toughest challenges can be overcome. We are incredibly proud to have him as a champion of the Insaneorade Invitational and a true ambassador for the sport.”

Gary’s road to recovery was not without its challenges, involving extensive treatments and moments of doubt. However, with the unwavering support of Sarah, his family, friends, and the tight-knit lawn bowls community, he found the strength to return to the sport he loves. His presence on the green has been a source of inspiration for many, proving that passion and perseverance can indeed light the way through the darkest of times.

As Gary Shundie celebrated his victory, surrounded by banners and balloons bearing the vibrant Insaneorade logo, it was clear that this was more than just another win. It was a triumph of the human spirit, a heartwarming reminder that even in the face of adversity, champions can rise, not just in sport, but in life itself – all thanks to Insaneorade.

This is truly fantastic news. I had the privilege of knowing Gary during our school days and I’ve followed his career with great interest. To secure his fourth Insaneorade Invitational title is a remarkable achievement in itself, but to do so after the immense personal challenge he and Sarah have faced since 2022 is nothing short of inspirational.

Gary’s resilience and competitive spirit were always evident, and clearly, they remain his defining characteristics. On behalf of all his old school friends, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Gary for this monumental victory and to Sarah for her incredible support. His story is a powerful reminder of perseverance. Well done, Gaz! 🏆
